Aberdeen footbridge, Hong Kong
- Lamp efficacy
Lamp efficacy
Ensuring the lamp efficiently converts electricity into light (lm/W).
- Ballast classification
Ballast classification
Controlling the electricity supply to the lamp (Energy Efficiency Index).
- Luminaire distribution
Luminaire distribution
The luminaire distribution gives a good quality uniform light at wide fitting spaces. This provides the correct lighting with fewer luminaires.
- System efficacy
System efficacy
Combining optical and thermal control within the luminaire (luminaire lm/W).
- Presence/absence detection
Presence/absence detection
Providing lighting only when it’s needed.
- Daylight detection
Daylight detection
Combining electronic dimmable control gear with photoelectric control allows the efficient use of daylight, reducing energy use in daylight conditions.
- Constant illuminance
Constant illuminance
Producing the correct lighting levels for the duration of the maintenance period.
- Task-scene setting
Task-scene setting
Allowing the user to set scenes and adapt the lighting to different tasks.
- Timed off
Timed off
Automatic cut-off to turn all lights off during unoccupied hours.
- Task lighting
Task lighting
Lighting task areas with the correct amount of light.
- Zoning of lighting
Zoning of lighting
Zoning lighting in accordance to occupancy patterns or window location.
- Maintenance schedule
Maintenance schedule
Tailoring maintenance schedules in accordance to product age, performance and environment.
- Waste light
Waste light
The use of recessed luminaires allows tighter control of obtrusive light and reduces upwards spill light. This prevents energy being used on waste light.
- Reflectance
Reflectance
Taking advantage of light which is reflected from the surface within the space.
- Visible smart metering
Visible smart metering
Enabling results of actions to be quickly seen as increased or decreased energy use to encourage responsible energy consumption.
Duoproof refurbishes Aberdeen footbridge, Hong Kong
Route 1 in Hong Kong is a major artery that runs in a generally north-south direction from Aberdeen to Sha Tin. The route begins at Aberdeen Praya Road in southern Hong Kong Island, which benefits from Aberdeen footbridge. Vitally important for safety, the footbridge enables thousands of pedestrians to cross this high volume, multiple lane road every year. However, with the footbridge’s lighting in need of refurbishment, the lighting division of the Highways Department approached Thorn to set about replacing the waterproof fittings.
The original lighting was of poor quality and low efficiency. The objectives were to therefore firstly provide comfort and safety, and secondly achieve energy savings. Ease of maintenance was also a key priority.
Although traditionally used as a clean room fitting, Thorn’s Duoproof luminaire with 2x28W fluorescent lamps and custom step dimming offered an ideal lighting solution for the footbridge. As well as using dimming to reduce energy consumption, Duoproof’s ULOR of 0% reduces glare for pedestrian comfort.
Importantly, Duoproof is recessed, tightly sealed to the ceiling, and IP65 and IK07 rated. This means it can be easily jet washed and cleaned with detergents from the ground, without the use of a ladder. What’s more, because it is recessed with no dirt or water traps, Duoproof presents a visually cleaner space with significantly lower maintenance demands.
Feedback from local residents and workers has been very positive. One lady said: “I have to walk across Aberdeen footbridge after I get off the bus everyday. It is brighter than before and I feel safer at night.”
