When talking about one of the latest solutions to come from Thorn we need to start with the numbers that define the project. Numbers may appear boring but they help demonstrate how exceptional the project is, both in terms of efficiency and also quality. For this project is for the Port of Livorno, one of the most important in Italy and the whole Mediterranean.

The installation covers an area of 120,000 square metres, that had previously been illuminated by 88 projectors, 8 for each of the 11 towers, with 2000 W discharge lamps. Installing Thorn's AreaFlood Pro LED projectors, equipped with 308 W light sources with an efficacy of 140 lm/W, has reduced the energy consumption required to light the entire port by 78%. Seventy-Eight percent less: we have gone from an installation of 193 kW to one of 43 kW. A revolution, added to which is the devices’ extraordinary life of 100 thousand hours without requiring re-lamping (L90B10 at 25°C). And both the compactness and lightness have reduced structural considerations, easing the cost of installation.
We started with the numbers because this extraordinary result could not be overlooked. However efficiency is not the end of the story,  the new installation guarantees the entire area a lighting quality that is totally superior to the previous installation, with the added benefit of energy savings. These are the cornerstones of Thorn's philosophy, which has AreaFlood Pro as one of its leading products.

The initial objective was to provide an average 30 lux illumination over the entire area, which in the design phase was divided according to the areas of application: loading and unloading cars and containers, vehicle and pedestrian transit and storage areas.

The result was achieved thanks to the AreaFlood Pro L 144L70-740 projectors, chosen by Marco Ceccherelli of LU.MAR. srl (Livorno), the company commissioned to update the lighting.  This is a flagship product from Thorn that offers a choice of five optics to adjust the lighting as required. It features precise lighting control and excellent light distribution combined with comfort and low energy use. The installation of the equipment in the port area required a custom treatment, "Marine Area", a paint that meets classes C4/C5M according to ISO 9223. In addition the attachments are made of suitable materials to avoid galvanic corrosion.

The solution has reached very high standards of illumination for such a large and differentiated area requiring perfect light for the many activities that take place there. In addition, the use of efficient product means that the customer has been able to make huge savings in energy costs.
